Learn About The Destinations
Koyasan is probably one of the top hidden gems in all of Japan. This small buddhist community allows visitors to partake in their local Buddhist practices. Not only is Koyasan the resting place of Kobo Daishi, one of Japan’s most significant religious figures for his Buddhist teachings, it’s also a tranquil mountain-top surrounded by nature and peace. We’ll be staying as guests at a local Buddhist temple where we’ll partake in the Buddhist fire ceremony, meditation, chanting, and even eat some Buddhist cuisine. But one of the best parts about this portion of the trip is the cemetery tour we’ll take in the evening while learning all about the traditions and history of Japan’s Buddhist influence.
Now that we’ve achieved perfect zen in the mountains it’s time to come back down to earth and checkout the hip port city of Kobe. Kobe is most known for its beef and it’s bustling nightlife although it has plenty of cultural discoveries waiting to be experienced. While in Kobe we’ll have the opportunity to hang by the beach, enjoy an onsen in the mountains, catch some amazing coastal views, try some delicious sake, and even devour some of the famed Kobe beef!
Takayama is another popular mountain town which is used to hosting tourists as they pass through Gifu. We’ll only be in Takayama a short time but we’ll get the most out of it as there’s tons to see. Along with seeing some unique things such as the Sukyo Mahikari church, we’ll also checkout the Hida Folk Village and try the less-known Hida beef. Prepare for a fun and relaxing stay while we hike our way around Takayama.
